The Peak Cluster CO₂ pipeline debacle in Wirral is a textbook example of crazy net-zero plans overriding local democracy, imposing a massive industrial project on our coastal communities with inadequate consultation, questionable justification, and zero regard for residents' deep-seated concerns over safety, environment, and disruption.
The project...a proposed 200km high-pressure CO₂ pipeline from Peak District cement and lime plants through Cheshire to an Above Ground Installation (AGI) near Meols/Moreton before offshore storage in the Irish Sea - has ignited fierce opposition. A chaotic public consultation at Hoylake Parade Centre saw queues spilling out the door amid widespread anger, with locals and councillors questioning why the Wirral must bear the brunt when alternatives exist.
Conservative councillors have led the charge in articulating these frustrations. Cllr Andrew Gardner and Cllr Max Booth (Hoylake and Meols ward), in a joint statement after the event, declared: "Nothing presented convinces us that this is the right move for Meols and the Wirral. The technology simply isn’t robust enough, and the critical question - why here? - has gone unanswered to our satisfaction." They stressed: "Our collective task is clear - to stop this and demand better," while promoting a petition to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, who holds final approval as it's a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project.
Cllr Jeff Green, Leader of Wirral’s Conservative Councillors, responded scathingly to the government's rejection of calls to pause the project, as covered by BBC News (Merseyside region): "This is an appalling response from a Government which promised, when first elected, to ‘listen’. It is a knee jerk rejection to the views of so many Wirral residents and one which I believe the Labour Party, including their representatives in Wirral, will come to regret. Legitimate fears and concerns for our environment, eco systems and health and wellbeing have been brushed aside. All of us who are against these plans must now strive even harder to stop Peak Cluster and to secure, I hope, another u-turn from the Government."
Media coverage has amplified the backlash. The Liverpool Echo reported on the unanimous council rejection, quoting councillors' fury and protesters accusing Peak Cluster of being “evasive, dismissive, and utterly disrespectful.” The Wirral Globe described the campaign as "just getting started," with one councillor telling developers to “take your pipe and stuff it wherever you like.” BBC Merseyside highlighted small business fears of construction chaos, with one owner stating the scheme was "not needed" and there are "far better ways to offset carbon," while noting council leader Paula Basnett's letter to Miliband conveying cross-party objections.
The scheme threatens farmland, green belt, drainage systems, businesses, communities and residents, with no clear local benefits, compensation, or robust risk assessments. Petitions have attracted thousands of signatures, and Conservative councillors and campaigners will continue leading the charge against the Peak Pipeline proposal.
Conservative campaigner David Fairbairn (Greasby, Frankby & Irby ward) summed up the cross-party fury: “It was great to see all parties come together at a special extraordinary council meeting to say to the Government: NO, we don’t want this pipeline here...or anywhere. We will keep the pressure on Wirral MPs to force a parliamentary debate and toss out CCS.”
