Greasby Residents Furious: Why Are Our Tennis Courts Still a Dangerous, Weed-Infested Shambles?

David Fairbairn with local residents at the tennis courts in question

Greasby residents and tennis players have had enough. Today they are publicly demanding Wirral Council finally explain why the once-popular Coronation Park tennis courts remain an unplayable, cracked, weed-riddled hazard – years after promises were made to fix them.

The courts are now so badly deteriorated that they are littered with trip hazards, puddles that never drain and weeds pushing through the tarmac. Parents refuse to let children play on them. Serious players have been forced to trek to courts miles away or simply quit the game. A vital free community facility lies abandoned while the council stays silent.

Local campaigner David Fairbairn, who was personally given assurances at a council meeting back in July, said:

“Another entire summer lost. No diggers, no resurfacing, no communication – nothing. Greasby has been completely ignored.

“We were promised action. Instead we’ve been fobbed off while the Town Hall pours cash into Birkenhead vanity projects. Residents are furious and they have every right to be.

“When, exactly, will the council honour its commitment and deliver safe, modern, free-to-use courts for Greasby families?"

David Fairbairn has confirmed he will confront officers and councillors face-to-face at next week’s Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee meeting, where he intends to demand a binding start date and an explanation for the years of broken promises.

One lifelong resident told us: “It’s an embarrassment. Greasby pays its council tax like everywhere else – why are we treated like second-class citizens?”

With patience exhausted and another playing season approaching, Greasby is making one thing crystal clear: promises are no longer enough. They want action – and they want it now. David Fairbairn will deliver that action
