Taxation Without Representation

Following the Green Party of Wirral’s meddling, the Electoral Commission has shamefully proposed slashing Hoylake and Meols ward from 3 Cllrs to just 2, while every other Wirral ward—21 in total—keeps 3. We demand equal representation for our ward, our residents, and our businesses, not this blatant unfairness!

Here’s a summary of the proposed changes by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) for Wirral Borough Council, with a specific focus on the Hoylake & Meols ward:

Key overall changes for Wirral

  • The review concluded that Wirral should be represented by 65 councillors (down from 66). (wirral.gov.uk)
  • The proposal is for 21 three-councillor wards and 1 two-councillor ward across the borough. (LGBCE)
  • The aim was to achieve electoral equality (so each councillor represents a similar number of electors) and to respect local ties/community identity. (wirral.gov.uk)

Changes specific to Hoylake & Meols Ward

  • The ward currently named “Hoylake & Meols” is noted in the final recommendations as being reduced to two councillors (from three) as part of the changes. (wirral.gov.uk)
  • One motivation was to ensure that the town of West Kirby is contained within a single ward (specifically in the neighbouring ward of West Kirby & Thurstaston), which in turn required revising the boundary between West Kirby & Thurstaston and Hoylake & Meols. (wirral.gov.uk)
  • The ward remains one of the wards in the West Wirral area; in the draft report the ward had an electoral variance of –8% by 2030 under the three-councillor model. (LGBCE)
  • As a result of feedback, the Commission explicitly states:

“West Kirby & Thurstaston and Hoylake & Meols wards have been revised to ensure all West Kirby town is included in a single ward. As a result, Hoylake & Meols ward will now have two councillors instead of three."

Negative Implications to Hoylake & Meols Ward

The boundary changes to the Hoylake and Meols Ward have provoked anger and frustration among residents, who view them as an unnecessary political reshuffle that undermines local representation. Many believe the new proposals dilute Hoylake’s and Meols’ electoral voice, leaving them with fewer councillors and reduced voting power to advocate for the area’s residents and businesses.

For many, these boundary changes feel less like modernisation and more like political manoeuvring — a move that distances decision-making from those who actually live in and care for Hoylake and Meols.

Sign our petition to demand that Hoylake and Meols Ward is represented by three councillors, just like every other ward in Wirral.

Taxation Without Representation

We demand three councillors in Hoylake and Meols Ward and call on Wirral Council and Wirral Members of Parliament to make clear that Hoylake and Meols Ward is treated like every other Wirral Ward.
