12 months ago, Labour and Green councillors rammed through parking fees in 25 more Wirral car parks, ignoring desperate pleas from residents, shops, and small businesses.
In this part of Wirral, Labour and the Greens voted to introduce charges at:
- Carr Lane in Hoylake
- Charles Road in Hoylake
- Market Street in Hoylake
- North Parade in Hoylake
- Meols Parade in Meols
- South Parade in West Kirby
- Banks Road in Heswall
- Roslin Road in Irby
- Fishers Lane in Pensby
- Thurstaston Common in Thurstaston
- Barlow Avenue in Bebington
- Church Road in Bebington
- Roland Avenue in Bebington
- Allport Lane in Bromborough
As part of their plan, the Council is borrowing £1m to pay for the pay and display meters and the interest on the money means that some of the sites will actually make a LOSS!
Now, a Half-Baked U-Turn Amid Economic Pain:
With the economy tanking, Labour's quietly backpedalling...but only for Birkenhead. They've quietly announced free all-day parking there in December.
But what about the rest of Wirral? We're calling on Labour and the Greens to ditch the plans for more parking charges.
Instead, our Better Plan for Parking would offer real support to shops and small businesses across the Borough:
- Free parking after 3pm in ALL council car parks this December.
- Freeze plans for new charges where parking's still free
- Full economic impact review to protect local jobs
- Better consultation with shops and businesses
- First 15 minutes FREE to spark impulse buys
- No fees on Remembrance Sunday, honour our heroes without the bill
